Stray Feathers Press was established in 2007 to publish books for curious naturalists. It was founded by
Bruce Whittington, a naturalist and freelance writer living in Ladysmith, British Columbia. Ladysmith was founded in 1894 by Robert Dunsmuir, a coal baron who named his new town in honour of the British relief of Ladysmith in South Africa during the Boer War. The coal has run out but forestry is still important, and the picturesque and historic town has a growing population of artists, potters and writers.
